Compression Fittings

Compression Fittings EN ISO 8434-1

Not all fittings are the same! This sentence applies in particular to stainless steel tube fittings and connections where maximum safety and minimal downtime are important.

The heart of a cutting ring fitting according to EN ISO 8434-1 (DIN 2353) is the cutting ring. In most cases, the specially designed and tested Two edge cutting rings are used,  which have shown themselves to be very precise and highly reliable a million times. The cutting ring seals the fully assembled screw in three prominent places.

Stainless steel compression fitting

Description of a cutting ring fitting

The 24° stainless steel cutting ring fitting in accordance with European standard ISO 8434 is a fitting for connecting and joining pipes. It is used in many industries in which liquid or gaseous media must be transported and the highest demands are placed on material and tightness

These include plant engineering with its diverse applications in hydraulics and pneumatics, as well as the paper, chemical and food industries. It is also used in the general oil and gas sector as well as specifically for hydrogen.

The cutting ring fitting is made up of three components: a connecting piece, the cutting ring and the union nut. The function is only guaranteed in combination with a seamlessly drawn pipe. The connecting piece, with the standardized 24° connection cone, serves as a media-conducting base body and is available in straight, angled, T or cross piece versions

The cutting ring is the heart of the cutting ring fitting. Schwer Fittings uses a hardened 2-edge cutting ring with a specially developed cutting contour that has proven itself millions of times over. This actually cuts into the pipe with both edges and performs both the sealing and retaining function of the connection

By tightening the union nut during final assembly in the connection piece, the pre-assembled cutting ring is guided into the cone of the connection piece. The seal is created by the cone in the spigot and the cut in the pipe. The cutting ring must be pre-assembled with a hardened pre-assembly spigot. This can be done manually or with an electrohydraulic machine.

Functional description of the Compression Fittings:

During pre-assembly, the cutting ring is pressed through the union nut into the 24° cone of the pre-assembly spigot. The cone is used to guide the cutting edges into the surface of the pipe, creating an incision with both cutting edges.

A ring-shaped material build-up forms on the surface of the pipe at the end of the cutting edge

If the pipe is cut at an exact right angle and deburred cleanly, three prominent points can be sealed in the fully assembled fitting.

Pre-assembly in the connecting piece is not possible, as this would damage the sealing surface. Only the final assembly of the screw connection takes place in the connection piece. Please also refer to our installation instructions and videos with the corresponding pipe recommendations to ensure that the fitting works perfectly.

The cutting rings are divided into 3 series:

LL: for compressed air, plastic pipes, laboratory apparatus; especially in the low pressure range up to max. PN 100

L: at larger size pressure loads up to max. PN 315, in the field of measurement and control technology, paper and plastics industry, pharmaceutical industry, aerospace, hydraulic systems and in the paint and coatings industry

S: at high pressure, vibrations and high mechanical. Stresses in heavy machinery, shipbuilding, mining, chemical industry, industrial refrigeration, harbor and lock installations, offshore, petrochemical, usually in the pressure range from 250 up to PN 400 using kegligen screw threads to PN 630th

When installing stainless steel pipes, pre-assembly must only be carried out in the hardened VOMO. Direct assembly in the stainless steel socket must be avoided! The VOMOS cones are subject to wear and must therefore be checked at regular intervals with a cone gauge to ensure that they are true to gauge. To prevent incorrect assembly from the outset, worn VOMOS must be replaced with new ones.

The laser-engraved test number on the media-bearing parts guarantees traceability to the original material and the assignment of the 3.1 certificate with all mechanical tests, even years later. The sizes from 6 to 42 mm and pressures up to 630 bar ensure a wide range of applications for the fittings. The range is rounded off by a choice of thread types (cylindrical, metric, tapered, NPT). Individual and customer-specific solutions are a matter of course thanks to in-house production, as is professional quality management. All parts are available immediately from stock with a DIN EN 10204 certificate.

Tubes: Seamless, soft annealed precision stainless steel tubes made of material 1.4571 in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1127 tolerance class D4/T3 are recommended; do not use welded tubes: the material structure in the area of the weld seam is altered, which can change the cutting behavior of the cutting ring. For cost reasons, however, thin-walled tubes are often used which cannot withstand the pressure of the cutting ring during assembly. We recommend the use of reinforcing sleeves to ensure that the fitting still functions properly.

24° Taper Couplings

The directional adjustable 24° sealing cone fittings are stainless and suitable for connection to threaded fittings to DIN 3853 with 24° -Inner cones.

Functionality:

The union nut is rotatably mounted on the neck of a body. The pin is thereby between two semi-circular in cross-section radial grooves of the neck and the nut and then performs the holding function of the taper coupling. The sealing is achieved by the O-ring 24° - Taper couplings in the range of 24° -lnner cone the threaded connector (bore form W to DIN 3861).

Benefits:

  • Adjustable direction by the rotatable cap nut on the neck
  • Screwed onto threaded fittings normally provided for cutting ring connections to DIN 3853
  • Small cross-sectional variation
  • Easy and quick assembly by tightening distance fixed at low torque
  • High leakage security by O-ring seal
  • High load capacity with pressure fluctuations and vibrations in the system
  • High rip out protection by interlocking construction

24° Weld Fittings

In the 24 ° -Weld nipple fitting the pipe welding side is adjusted depending on the diameter and wall thickness of the pipe dimensions. The seal between the fitting and the welding nipple is an O-ring, which is mounted on the 24 ° cone of the welding nipple.

FAQ: Stainless Steel Cutting Ring Fittings

Beschreibung einer Schneidringverschraubung

The 24° stainless steel cutting ring fitting, compliant with European standard ISO 8434, is a fitting designed for connecting and joining pipes. It is used in many industries where liquid or gaseous media must be transported and where the highest demands are placed on materials and sealing performance.

These include, among others, plant engineering with its diverse applications in the fields of hydraulics and pneumatics, as well as the paper, chemical, and food industries. In addition, it is used both in the general oil and gas sector and specifically with hydrogen.

The cutting ring fitting consists of three components: a socket, the cutting ring, and the union nut. Functionality is only guaranteed when combined with a seamless drawn tube. The socket, with its standardized 24° connection cone, serves as the media-carrying base body and is available in straight, elbow, T-shaped, or cross configurations.

The heart of the cutting ring fitting is the cutting ring. Schwer Fittings uses a hardened 2-edge cutting ring with a specially developed cutting contour, which has proven itself millions of times over. This ring actually cuts into the pipe with both edges and performs both the sealing and retaining functions of the connection.

When the union nut is tightened during final assembly in the socket, the pre-assembled cutting ring is guided into the socket’s cone. The seal is created by the cone in the socket and the cut in the pipe. The cutting ring must be pre-assembled with a hardened pre-assembly socket. This can be done manually or with an electro-hydraulic machine.

How does a compression fitting work?

During pre-assembly, the cutting ring is pressed into the 24° cone of the pre-assembly fitting using the cap nut. The cone guides the cutting edges into the surface of the pipe, creating an incision with both cutting edges. An annular ring of material forms on the pipe surface at the end of the cutting edge.

If the pipe is cut exactly at a right angle and cleanly deburred, three distinct points can be sealed in the fully assembled fitting.

Pre-assembly in the socket is not possible, as this would damage the sealing surface. Only the final assembly of the fitting takes place in the socket. To ensure proper functioning of the fitting, please also refer to our installation instructions and videos with the corresponding pipe recommendations.

Where are compression fittings used?

Cutting ring fittings are used in numerous industrial applications where a secure, metal-to-metal sealed, and pressure-resistant pipe connection is required. They are among the most important connection systems in fluid technology and ensure that piping functions reliably, vibration-resistant, and leak-free even under high operating pressures and dynamic loads. Particularly in hydraulics and pneumatics, compression fittings have been used successfully for years due to their robust construction and consistent sealing performance.

In the process industry as well—such as in the chemical industry, pharmaceutical and food production, or petrochemicals— stainless steel compression fittings are used because they must meet the highest standards for purity, corrosion resistance, and safety.

The mechanical and plant engineering sectors also make extensive use of compression fittings, for example in manufacturing machines, automation systems, or robotic systems, where robust and releasable pipe connections are required. In addition, they are used in energy and power plant technology, paint and surface treatment technology, as well as in laboratory and testing technology. Due to their high temperature and pressure resistance, their resistance to&highly aggressive media, and their reliable sealing function, compression fittings are suitable for virtually any industry in which media must be safely and controllably conveyed through piping systems.

What distinctions are there within the product range?

The cutting ring fittings are divided into 3 series:

LL: for compressed air, plastic tubing, laboratories, and equipment manufacturing; primarily for low-pressure applications up to a maximum of PN 100

L: for higher pressure loads up to max. PN 315, in the fields of measurement and control technology, the paper and plastics industries, the pharmaceutical industry, aviation, hydraulic systems, and the paint and coatings industry.

S: for severe pressure surges, vibrations, and high mechanical stresses in heavy machinery construction, shipbuilding, mining, chemical industry, large-scale refrigeration systems, port and lock facilities, offshore, petrochemicals, typically in the pressure range from 250 to PN 400; up to PN 630 when using conical screw-in threads.

What are the advantages of a compression fitting from Schwer Fittings?

Schwer Fittings' cutting rings are marked with a lot number as standard. Because all components of the cutting ring fitting are marked, the manufacturing process can be traced back to the raw material, making it possible to issue a material certificate even years later. For critical process parameters, we offer a comprehensive selection of additional cutting ring variants.

The union nuts are marked in accordance with standards, indicating size, pressure rating, material, and manufacturer’s logo. Here too, traceability is ensured for Schwer Fittings via a test number. A surface coating to prevent cold welding of the nut is available upon request.

The significant advantages also include:

  • extremely good cutting performance
  • high tightness, no rust formation on the surface
  • secure installation
  • no "settling" of the cutting ring
With which other product lines can a compression fitting be used?

Combination with sealing cone fittings:
The direction-adjustable 24° stainless steel sealing cone fittings are suitable for connection to threaded sockets according to DIN 3853 with 24° internal cones.

Combination with weld cone:
With the 24° weld cone fitting, the pipe welding side is adapted to standard pipe dimensions depending on the diameter and wall thickness. The seal between the fitting body and the weld nipple is provided by an O-ring mounted on the 24° cone of the weld nipple. Tightening a cap nut presses the welding cone with the O-ring into the 24° cone of the fitting body.

What are the technical specifications (pressures, temperatures, media, etc.) of a cutting ring fitting?

Please refer directly to the product page in the eShop for all technical specifications, including pressure ratings. Please also review the technical notes, data sheets, and installation instructions to ensure safe and proper installation of the compression fitting.

How do you properly install a compression fitting?

When installing stainless steel pipes, pre-assembly must be performed exclusively in the hardened VOMO. Direct installation in the stainless steel fitting must be avoided! The cones of the VOMOS are subject to wear and must therefore be checked at regular intervals using a cone gauge to ensure they remain within specifications. To prevent incorrect installation from the outset, worn VOMOS must be replaced with new ones.
