This is carried out by means of the coned seal which can be raised or lowered by the spindle. The further the spindle is raised, the greater the passage and hence the flow. Non Return Valves sf non return valves close the through flow in one direction (the return) and allow an almost unrestricted flow in the other direction (the flow). As long as the flow pressure is greater than the return pressure, the valve remains open (providing there is sufficient pressure acting against the spring).
